It took three days for a Klevian fleet to meet them. By that time, Varimar's heat had run its course. The hormonal changes in his mate told him that she was carrying his child. Part of him felt like he should be confused, but in truth, realising his heat was done and his little Cara was carrying their child had been the happiest, most fulfilling moment of his life. Now, when they had sex, it would be for the pleasure, for the connection, to grow the bond strengthening between them even now.

Varimar had no idea what the rest of the human race was like, but his mate was brave, intelligent and empathetic. In the few days they'd had, he'd learned a lot about her. Now, he stood by her with pride, determined not to allow Kerrin's prejudice to taint what he knew of the small, soft, delicate female standing at his side.

They stood side by side in front of the airlock, waiting to board Kerrin’s ship.

Kerrin’s family had held the throne on the homeworld for generations, but while Kerrin's father had been king, it was his uncle who spent most of his time raising him. Thirty years ago, a human vessel had come across a prototype ship the Klevians were testing. They destroyed it. The pilot was Kerrin’s uncle. To this day, they still didn’t know why.

The humans wouldn't even acknowledge their part in the event. For thirty years, they’d been presenting their evidence to the humans, though, from what Varimar was learning from his mate, they couldn't understand what the Klevians were saying.

Cara reassured him the humans working in the fleet were fitted with translators, herself included, and that humans had attempted to translate the Klevian language. Apparently, neither translation specialists nor their computer systems had been able to decode it.

'The grammar, the syntax, the rules of your language are too complex for us to work out,’ she’d told him while lying in his arms. Her voice was husky, her body boneless against him. She seemed satisfied after his frustration at being unable to communicate with her had boiled over into a four-hour-long session of hard fucking.

It still frustrated him that in the days he'd spent with his new mate, she still didn't understand a word he said.

Varimar was pulled back into the present when the airlock opened and Korvalin, Kerrin's head of security, boarded. There was a sneer on his face when he saw Cara by Varimar's side. 'My condolences to you, Varimar. To be bonded to such a creature.'

Varimar felt the growl rise in his throat before it was audible. 'You will treat my mate with respect, Korvalin. Or I will teach you the meaning of the word.'

Korvalin stared at him, disbelief on his face. 'You are truly lost to defend this species.'

'I don't defend the species,' he growled. 'I defend my mate.'

Korvalin shook his head and turned. 'Kerrin will not understand this,' he said. 'Come. He is waiting for you.'

Varimar looked down at his mate. She watched with her bright, observant brown eyes.
